2009 Ford Crown Victoria Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Safely and Effectively Service the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2009 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: Service of the engine front cover needs depowering the fire suppression system as a safety precaution against serious injuries. Before beginning the procedure the vehicle needs to be placed in NEUTRAL on a hoist then both valve cover assemblies and coolant pump and crankshaft front seal must be extracted. The service requires draining engine oil followed by installing the drain plug and tightening it to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). In the next step remove four bolts joining the oil pan to the front face of the engine along with the bolt and shield and the idler pulley accessory drive bolt. The removal operation requires following a specific order for bolt and stud bolt extraction before you can unattach the engine front cover from its dowel. A plastic scraping tool and metal surface preparation should be used to clean the sealing surface while avoiding tools that might damage the area. For installing the new engine front cover use silicone gasket and sealant to cover the cylinder head-to-block and oil pan-to-cylinder block surfaces. After putting in place the new gaskets you must insert the cover without tightness before torquing the fasteners to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) by using the correct sequence. After securing the front shaft accessory drive idler pulley with 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) torque, proceed to install anditet the shield and its respective bolts at this same torque setting. The four front oil pan bolts should get loose installation followed by one-time torque of 20 Nm (177 lb-in) and subsequent further tightening by an additional 60 degrees. Affix the power steering pump into position then bolt it securely with 25 Nm torque (18 lb-ft). The procedure requires installation of new crankshaft front seal and coolant pump and valve covers. The engine requires clean oil addition while fire suppression system repowering should follow all safety procedures when completing the maintenance process.
