2009 Ford E-250 Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag System on 2009 Ford E-250?
A: Eye protection should always be worn during Supplemental Restraint System deactivation procedures because the operation can cause serious injuries. It is unsafe to probe electrical connectors found on safety belt buckle/retractor pretensioners, adaptive load limiting retractors or air bag and Safety Canopy® and side air curtain modules since this action could trigger deployments which elevate injury possibility or death risks. The use of memory saver devices to avoid accidental deployment should never be applied. The procedure requires resting the RCM bracket assembly on the floor pan together with restraining the SRS before actions are taken to the RCM electrical connectors to avoid damage. The air bag warning indicator activates itself when the proper RCM fuse called fuse 32 (10A) is removed but the ignition is set to ON. Disable all vehicle accessories together with the ignition system. Remove the Smart Junction Box (SJB) cover followed by RCM fuse 32 at its location under the left instrument panel side. After switching on the ignition allow the air bag warning indicator to stay on for 30 seconds while checking that the chosen fuse has been successfully detached. The procedure requires correctly removing the affected fuse before moving forward. Disable the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable before waiting for at least one minute to drain back up power supply at each step while ensuring to disengage auxiliary batteries and suppliers when installed in the vehicle. The SRS air bag system requires this essential step when working on new components related to front and side air bags or when approaching the front and side impact sensors or the RCM. The wheels must be positioned straight ahead before the driver air bag module is removed by unfastening bolt covers and bolts plus disconnecting the horn and Clock Spring electrical connectors. You should proceed to remove the glove compartment followed by detached electrical connector of the passenger air bag module. The last step includes putting RCM fuse 32 back into SJB and reattaching the battery ground cable.
