2009 Ford E-250 Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2009 Ford E-250?
A: The driver air bag module must be removed initially before servicing or repairing the Clock Spring assembly. Pull outward on the steering column opening cover until the retaining clips become free to detach the pin-type retainer while removing the electrical connector attached to the steering column lower finish panel reinforcement. The service requires you to remove the two Data Link Connector (DLC) screws and place them off to the side. Unplug the Clock Spring electrical wires and then remove them from the bracket which is located at the bottom of the steering column. Maneuvering road wheels to face forward must be completed before unfastening the steering wheel. Receive the required tools and procedures and then start by unscrewing the tilt lever/handle if fitted before moving forward to remove the ignition lock cylinder through the RUN position by using the lock cylinder release tab at the same time you pull the cylinder outward. Start by removing three screws which enables lowering the steering column shroud followed by removing the upper steering column shroud. Caretakers who plan to retain the Clock Spring should apply tape around the rotor to stop its rotational movement. Start by taking out the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch from the vehicle if present then release three Clock Spring retaining clips on the way to detaching the wire which connects to the steering column using two retaining clips. Run the wiring through the instrument panel before taking out the Clock Spring device. Installation of new or old Clock Spring begins with key removal and maintaining the rotor at its central alignment. To recenter a Clock Spring maintenance requires a stationary outer housing and clockwise rotation until resistance occurs followed by counterclockwise rotation for 2.25 turns until reaching the center point. To install the Clock Spring begin by lining up its flat rotor portions with the steering column shaft flats then insert it onto the column and use pressure at three points along the 6, 12 and 3 o'clock positions for proper fitting. After wiring installation over the instrument panel users should connect the retaining clips while they should also integrate a key-in-ignition warning indicator switch if their vehicle needs it. Reattach the steering column shrouds from above and below before installing the ignition lock cylinder in proper seating position and correct alignment. Check the ignition lock function while rotating the cylinder through all system options. Begin by putting on any available steering wheel tilt lever and handle before proceeding to attach the steering wheel. After connecting the Clock Spring electrical connectors you can add the pin-type retainers to the bracket. The final sequence requires mounting the steering column opening trim panel reinforcement through six bolts while installing the DLC with two screws and fixing the steering column opening cover with its retaining clips in proper position. Continuation of the procedure includes reconnecting the DLC electrical connector and screws before installing the driver air bag module.
