2009 Ford Expedition Exhaust Pipe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Exhaust Pipe Y-Pipe Dual Catalytic Converter on 2009 Ford Expedition?
A: The service of an exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter starts by positioning a hoisted vehicle in NEUTRAL. The first step involves disconnecting the HO2S alongside CMS electrical connectors while also removing the transmission support crossmember followed by loosening the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket cap bolt. When servicing the Y-pipe dual catalytic converter you need to remove 3 bolts on Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles to slide off the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket from the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter. The mounting bracket of 4WD vehicles requires removing the converter before it can slide off. Remove all 4 bolts on the bracket. Next you should remove the 2 exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly bolts together with the 4 exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts before discarding all the nuts. Disengage the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter from the vehicle and also detach the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket whenever required. Before proceeding with conversion separation the RH catalytic converter-to-LH catalytic converter Torca(R) clamp needs to be loosened then the converters need to be separated. During installation clean all flared surfaces of the exhaust manifold outlet and the dual catalytic converter inlet of the exhaust Y-pipe assembly and the surfaces of the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler components. Mount an individual RH catalytic converter onto the corresponding position of the LH catalytic converter if the duo has been separated. All 4WD vehicles require the exhaust system and transmission bracket to be returned in place. Secure the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter inside the vehicle by applying 2 new RH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts while tightening the RH lower nut first to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) then torquing the RH upper nut to the same value. Secure the LH inner nut initially before you tighten both 2 new LH catalytic converter-to-exhaust manifold nuts to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) torque and finish by tightly fastening the LH inner nut to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). The Torca(R) clamp connecting the RH catalytic converter to LH catalytic converter must be tightened to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) if it becomes loose. Tighten the 2 exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly bolts by starting with the outer bolt followed by the inner bolt to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) and finishing with the outer bolt to the same torque. The procedure for mounting bracket-to-transmission bolts on 4WD vehicles requires tightening them to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft). RWD vehicles require the operator to slide on the exhaust and transmission mounting bracket then install the 3 bolts before securing them with 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) force. Complete the procedure by checking the exhaust system isolators for zero load through necessary alignment before installing the transmission support crossmember. Tighten the exhaust and transmission bracket cap bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) while reconnecting HO2S and CMS electrical connectors.
