2009 Ford Explorer Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Deactivate the Air Bag System on 2009 Ford Explorer?
A: Vehicle maintenance technicians should deactivate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) by wearing protective eye gear and maintaining pointed deployment door or trim cover direction away from their body to avoid serious injuries. Maintain all vehicle accessories switched off before you put the ignition into the off position. Fusion 17 (10A) will be removed from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) which is found underneath the instrument panel on the left side. Check the air bag warning indicator turns on constantly and stays illuminated for minimum thirty seconds once you remove the right fuse. The procedure requires you to disconnect the battery ground cable followed by a one-minute idle period to drain back up power. First detach the driver air bag module two bolts before disconnecting its three electrical connectors then unmount the driver air bag module from its place. Start by opening the glove compartment and detaching the wiring retainer and then remove the four bolts from the passenger air bag module heat shield. Remove the electrical connector of the passenger air bag module located on the LH side and disconnect the same connector from the passenger seat side air bag module. The passenger side trim panel of the C-pillar needs releasing on Explorer and Mountaineer vehicles before disconnecting their safety canopy module electrical connector followed by a similar process on the driver side. Owner of Explorer Sport Trac vehicles need to lift driver and passenger side upper C-pillar trim panels before disconnecting each safety canopy module electrical connection. You need to separate the electrical connector of the driver seat side air bag module which is located under the driver seat. The next step includes reinstallation of RCM fuse 17 (10A) followed by the battery ground cable reconnection. The SRS can be reactivated by removing RCM fuse 17 (10A) twice followed by ground cable removal and a minimum one-minute wait period. Connect the driver seat side air bag module electrical connector before you insert both safety canopy module electrical connectors across driver and passenger sides. Afterward, reinstall the upper C-pillar trim panels. Assess whether the safety belt retractor gives smooth operation without any signs of resistance or resistance points. The passenger seat side air bag electrical connector requires reattachment to the seat track bracket while the LH side passenger air bag module electrical connector is completed. The passenger air bag module heat shield and its corresponding bolts should go in while maintaining proper attachment of the wiring retainer. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connectors into the corresponding keyways while installing the two driver air bag module bolts to a torque of 7 Nm (62 lb-in). Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON after reinstalling RCM fuse 17 (10A) to the SJB while connecting the battery ground cable. Honor vehicle safety by avoiding personnel entry during this phase. A SRS proof procedure requires first switching the ignition from ON to OFF before allowing a 10-second period and finally returning to ON ignition while observing the continuous air bag warning indicator activation. The SRS indicator's operation may get hindered if an SRS fault occurs by not illuminating or showing a continuous or 5 Hz frequency blink. The sound of five sequences of five beeps will activate when an SRS fault persists with an inoperable air bag warning indicator needing professional diagnosis and repair. A scan tool should be used to erase all ongoing DTCs that exist in both the RCM and Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM).
