2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Axle Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the axle shaft assembly on 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Prior to axle shaft assembly removal or installation the vehicle must be placed in neutral gear position on a hoist for stability. After removing the wheel and tire you should disassemble the halfshaft nut but keep its torque at 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) when reinstalling it. The front wheel hub remover should be used instead of a hammer to separate the rear axle halfshaft assembly from the hub because this prevents damage to threads along with internal constant velocity (CV) joint components. When reinstalling the brake cable retainer screw you should tighten it to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). To install the new toe link nut properly, remove the outboard component and back the bolt so it can receive clearance then torque the replacement bolt to 350 Nm (259 lb-ft) when vehicle sits at curb height. Replace the discarded outboard lower arm bolt by torquing the new one to 275 Nm (203 lb-ft). The bolt arrangement in the wheel knuckle needs to be discarded followed by application of 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) torque to these new bolts. Before turning the wheel knuckle assembly aim it upward against the outboard bolt of the upper arm while loosening the upper arm bolt to stop bushing damage. Then apply torque of 275 Nm (203 lb-ft) to the bolt at the height of curb ride. You can remove the halfshaft assembly through the usage of halfshaft remover combined with handle to disconnect the inboard CV joint housing from the differential side gear. Lower the vehicle only after tightening the wheel hub nut to its specified torque so wheel bearing damage is avoided; brake application should stop the halfshaft from rotating while you insert the halfshaft into position then tighten the wheel hub nut to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) torque before discarding it for replacement. Replace the wheel hub nut with a new one and apply torque to 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) during its first 5 minutes on the threads because the nut features a single-use locking chemical that requires heat activation. The differential stub shaft seal requirement for replacement happens when removing the halfshaft during maintenance. Proper seat alignment of the halfshaft in the differential side gear until an audible click sound helps prevent leakage. Complete the operation by applying the brake to stop halfshaft rotation and use the reverse removal steps while installing.
