2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace the Rear Drive Shaft for the 4.0L SOHC on 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: To replace the rear one-piece driveshaft of a 4.0L sohc vehicle you should start by positioning it on a hoist while keeping the vehicle in neutral. Users should index the marks between the extension housing and driveshaft before splitting them apart. The users must mark both the transmission extension housing and output shaft using identical marks for proper driveshaft balance retention. Additionally, index-mark the driveshaft flange to the pinion flange for balance. Proper replacement with threadlock and sealer is feasible for existing pinion flange bolts to retain their use when proper new bolts are not accessible or the present bolts remain undamaged. You can use new or cleaned bolt components that need 112 Nm (83 lb-ft) torque after removing and discarding the four pinion flange bolts. A suitable tool should be applied to pry only in the marked region of the driveshaft flange yoke away from the pinion flange while steering clear of the driveshaft components. Tighten the bolts across the pinion flange so the driveshaft flange settles perfectly with a cross-pattern installation method. New driveshaft flange bolts should be used but if needed the original bolts can be treated with threadlock and sealer then used to reinstall by reversing the removal steps.
