2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Drive Shaft on a Rear-Wheel Drive on 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Prior to servicing the one-piece driveshaft in the rear of a rear-wheel drive vehicle drivers must secure the car in neutral gear and raise it onto a hoist. Bart the index marks located on extension housing and driveshaft before their disconnection and make positioning marks on the transmission output shaft to match the marks from the extension housing for balance purposes. Additionally, index-mark the driveshaft flange to the pinion flange. Replace the four pinion flange bolts with new ones before torquing them to 112 Nm (83 lb-ft). The proper tool should be selected to create gentle pressure in the specified area for dividing the driveshaft flange yoke from the pinion flange instead of direct hammering. A proper drive shaft flange fit with the pinion flange requires bolt tightening that must follow a star pattern. The threads of original bolts should be treated with Threadlock(R) and sealer when new replacements are not feasible. You should perform the opposite steps to reinstall the system.
