How to Service the Rear Two-Piece Drive Shaft on 2009 Ford F-150?

Service of the rear two-piece driveshaft requires the vehicle to be set to NEUTRAL position on a hoist. Mark all points between the driveshaft flange and the pinion flange and between the driveshaft and extension housing for reinstallation alignment. The four driveshaft flange bolts should be removed before installation but you must replace them afterwards with new bolts fastened to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). A proper tool should be used instead of hammering to disconnect the driveshaft flange from its flange pilot at the designated area. When replacing the driveshaft center bearing bolts, the user must first lower the driveshaft and slide the slip yoke in reverse off the output shaft keeping a 48 Nm (35 lb-ft) torque across installation. The extension housing requires plugging in order to stop fluid leakage. The pinion flange pilots must always face each other squarely when the driveshaft flanges get installed. You should tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern across each flange to minimize potential damage. Threadlock and sealer need to be applied to coat original bolts when new replacement bolts are not accessible. End with the reinstallation of the driveshaft by following the reverse procedure and matching the index marks established during removal.
