  A: The first step in servicing or repairing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is to drain the cooling system. First disconnect the Air Cleaner outlet pipe followed by separating the two engine wiring harness electrical connectors which must be released from their bracket. The industrial process starts with removing the EGR valve electrical connector then disconnecting the center PCM electrical connector. The service begins with unfastening the clamp and removing the radiator hose from the outlet adapter before uncoupling the clamp and heater hose from the EGR valve. Take the two bolts that secure the EGR valve before discarding the gasket material. During new EGR valve installation tighten it to 20 Nm which equals 177 lb-in. Metal scrapers and wire brushes as well as power abrasive discs should never be used on EGR valve sealing surfaces because these tools create permanent leaks through scratches and gouges; a plastic scraping tool should be chosen instead to clean all remaining EGR valve gasket material. Cleaning and preparing the mating surfaces can be done through metal surface prep technique when there is no trace of residual gasket material.
