2009 Ford Fusion Air Bag Control Module Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Air Bag Control Module on 2009 Ford Fusion?
A: The Restraints Control Module (RCM) requires servicing under two conditions: first check that the ignition switch is off and secondly maintain the RCM at its original horizontal position when connected because any modification to the position poses a significant risk of Safety Canopy(R) deployment leading to fatal injuries. The RCM and impact sensor mounting areas should be checked for deformation after any crash incident because new parts must be installed under all circumstances regardless of air bag deployment status. Run Programmable Module Installation (PMI) during new RCM installation to eliminate system failure occurrences. Before disconnection of the large RCM electrical connector through the thumb tab press and connector position assurance lever pivot you must depower the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). After RCM extraction install the new unit using 12 Nm (106 lb-in) torque for right-hand bolts and the left-hand bolt to match this value. The proper alignment of the large RCM connector should be verified prior to connection by applying gentle force until an audible click forms and finally locking it with the connector position assurance lever. The SRS system should be powered up without immediate proof testing followed by completion of the PMI procedure when installing a new RCM. The verification of SRS functions requires a sequence of switching the ignition from ON to OFF and waiting 10 seconds before returning it to ON while watching the air bag warning indicator which should activate for 6 seconds before shutting off. Further inspection is necessary for the warning indicator when it fails to illuminate or stays on continuously or flashes at 5 Hz rate. The process needs all persistent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to be eliminated from both the RCM and Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) through scan tool diagnostics.
