2009 Ford Mustang Control Arm Bushing Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the upper control arm bushing on 2009 Ford Mustang?
A: Before work starts on the upper arm bushing you must align the shock absorber mark with the protective sleeve when the vehicle sits level. Set the vehicle neutral and hoist the car up. Use two jackstands to support the rear axle near its assembly points but stay clear of the differential housing. Lower the rear axle partially by unfastening the upper arm-to-upper arm bushing nut and discarding the flag bolt. Use the Rear Drive Unit Bushing Remover/Installer, Axle Bushing Remover/Installer and Adapter combined to take off the upper control arm bushing. To place the new bushing in the bracket you should align its voids with the top and bottom of the rear axle bracket before putting the tools back on to set the bushing. Install it with a 12 mm (0.47 in) space between the bushing flange and the rear axle bracket. Lift the rear axle when the shock absorber mark fits within the protective sleeve. Keep the suspension at curb height when eyelet and bushing compression keep the upper control arm rear nut tight to prevent damage. Place a new upper arm-to-upper arm bushing nut and flag bolt and torque them to 175 Nm (129 lb-ft).
