2009 Lincoln MKS Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2009 Lincoln MKS?
A: The Clock Spring service and repair process must start with depowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Ensure the SRS functions without faults before returning the vehicle to customers. First eliminate driver air bag module then proceed to remove the steering wheel. The service begins by separating the steering wheel angle sensor electrical connector followed by removing two screws that secure the steering wheel angle sensor. To continue the procedure disconnect the Clock Spring electrical wires simultaneously remove the two retaining Clock Spring screws. The installation process requires correct Clock Spring centralization to avoid premature failure. When operating the Clock Spring inner rotor avoid excessive turns since it can damage the internal ribbon wire. While changing the Clock Spring you should delay removing the anti-rotation key until after the steering wheel installation. In case removal occurred previously you should center the Clock Spring by rotating its inner rotor counterclockwise until light resistance appears then move it clockwise by two full turns for a proper 12 o'clock position. A step before wheel installation demands you must verify that road wheels maintain their direct path. The installation requires removing the anti-rotation key only after the steering wheel gets properly installed. Installing the driver air bag module follows. To finish the process you must activate the System Repowering.
