- Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2009 Lincoln MKZ?A: Wear protective eye gear when deactivating the Supplemental Restraint System because the deployment of safety features will result in fatal injuries and protect against accidental safety element release through memory saver devices. It is unsafe to probe electrical connectors on air bag modules together with safety belt pretensioners. The Restraints Control Module (RCM) shows an air bag warning indicator when the correct fuse 25 (7.5A) is taken out and the ignition key is set to ON position. All accessories on the vehicle should be turned to OFF position followed by applying the OFF setting to the ignition before removing the RCM fuse from the Smart Junction Box (SJB). After pulling out the fuse users should turn the ignition ON to confirm the air bag warning indicator stays on for more than 30 seconds. Continue by removing the fuse which contains the correct RCM. The battery ground cable needs disconnecting and at least one minute of waiting time for the back up power to drain before proceeding. A 3-mm Allen wrench can be used to unlock the two locking pins of the driver air bag module allowing users to release the electrical connectors without damaging the locking buttons. The passenger air bag module removal starts with the disassembly of two bolts followed by unclipping the deployment door retention clips. One should repeat these same steps while disconnecting electrical connectors from the passenger seat side air bag module and both side air curtain modules accurately. The last step includes reconnecting the battery ground cable together with installing the RCM fuse. The process to activate the SRS begins with RCM fuse removal followed by a one-minute battery ground cable disconnect and subsequent reconnection of every air bag module electrical connector when the locking buttons should remain in their released position. Place the passenger air bag module correctly while securing it with bolts before returning the trim panels to their original position. Finish the process by joining driver air bag electrical connectors and then position the module correctly to the steering wheel before installing the RCM fuse. A battery connection procedure must follow and you should verify the SRS using the air bag warning indicator for proper functionality. A scanning tool must be used to clear continuous DTCs from the RCM and Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) before diagnosing and repairing any detected faults.
