- Q: How to remove and replace the shock absorber on Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) on 2009 Lincoln MKZ?A: The procedure for replacing shock absorbers starts with removing the upper arm of Front Wheel Drive (FWD) as well as All-Wheel Drive (AWD) MKZ and Fusion/Milan vehicles. Fasten the shock absorber compression by using tie straps until it maintains the compressed state. You must first take out the three shock absorber bracket bolts before extracting the shock absorber along with its upper bracket which you should discard with the bolts. Start by indexing the shock absorber along the bracket surface and then take out the shock absorber upper bolt, nut and bracket. The indexing mark on old shock absorbers needs to be transferred to new replacements before installation begins. You should carefully install the new shock absorber upper bolt and nut but do not make them fully tight yet. While tightening the upper shock absorber nut maintain the same angle between parts to avoid damage; position the index markings correctly until the shock absorber center line reaches 118 degrees from the bracket alignment tab. When installing the upper bolt on AWD vehicles tighten it to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) while FWD vehicles require a torque of 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). Put the shock absorber together with the bracket before you install and tighten all three new bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Finally, reinstall the upper arm.
