2009 Lincoln Navigator Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the RH camshaft on 2009 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The technicians must start the RH camshaft replacement process by placing the crankshaft damper spoke at the 12 o'clock position and the timing mark indentation at the 1 o'clock position. Remove the RH valve cover. Before the procedure start disconnect the RH Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector and remove the sensor. Then loosen and back off the RH camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt by one complete turn. At this time check if the exhaust lobe of No. 1 cylinder camshaft is currently on the exhaust stroke. If not dump crankshaft rotation by one full revolution until it aligns with the 12 o'clock position. The three roller followers on the designated camshaft need removal by keeping tracking of their starting positions to prevent damage to the engine. The valve spring compressor along with safeFollowers removal allows you to maintain the valve keepers in place. Take a clockwise rotation of the crankshaft till both the damper spoke reaches the 6 o'clock mark while the timing mark gets to 7 o'clock. The equipment should be positioned directly between timing chain and engine block with the square section secured during the whole procedure. Use pliers to detach the front thrust camshaft bearing cap by flipping it directly upward after unbolt the two screws then proceed to remove the other bearing caps in proper sequence cleaning everything before checking for any sign of wear. Take away the camshaft phaser and sprocket assembly after discarding the bolt and washer then uninstall the camshaft. Before camshaft lubrication the first step is to inspect both phaser assembly and sprocket for damage while using engine oil to lubricate new camshaft and journals. All rollers from the camshaft should stay in their installed position as you place the camshaft back into its original position. The camshaft phaser and sprocket assembly should be mounted onto the camshaft while positioning it alongside the timing chain scribe marks and securing with a new camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt which remains lightly tightened. Apply clean engine oil to the original positions of the five camshaft bearing caps before gently installing their corresponding ten bolts which require tightening to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) in the specified sequence. After removing the Timing Chain Locking Tool turn the crankshaft half-counterclockwise and check the camshaft position is correct. The three original camshaft roller followers can be installed using the Valve Spring Compressor while you install the CMP sensor with its bolt at 10 Nm (89 lb-in) torque and connect the CMP electrical connector. Tighten the new camshaft phaser and sprocket bolt in two installation steps by first torquing it to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) and continuing to apply 90 degrees more torque then reinstalling the RH valve cover.
