How to Safely Service and Repair the Side Air Bag Curtain Module on 2009 Mercury Milan?

Any service or repair of the side air curtain module should maintain the active Safety Canopy® or side air curtain module with the tear seam turned away from your body to prevent injuries from accidental deployment. The installation of a new headliner requires replacement of all A-, B-, and C-pillar upper trim panels and attaching components while also installing a new Safety Canopy® or side air curtain module only when this system has been deployed. Protection of the Safety Canopy® or side air curtain module deployment path requires clear access without any interference while you should never use probes on the electrical connectors to prevent unintentional deployment. The air bag warning indicator comes on when the correct Restraints Control Module (RCM) fuse is taken out while the ignition switch is turned ON. The vehicle release needs a functional and faultless Supplemental Restraint System before deployment. Headliner removal should start the procedure followed by SRS depowering. Disconnect the side air curtain module electrical connector while also removing the connector pin-type retainer from the C-pillar sheet metal. When reinstalling the bolt and front tether bracket of the side air curtain module maintain a torque of 7 Nm (62 lb-in). The installation requires technicians to remove all side air curtain module bolts connecting to the A-pillar moulding bracket and the rear of the A-pillar and the two middle rear bolts which should be tightened to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). Keep track of the positions for rear bracket hook and center guide hook retainer before removing the two bolts from each bracket while letting the center guide hook retainer disconnect from the sheet metal then tighten them to 7 Nm (62 lb-in) when reinstalling. Take the side air curtain module toward the front until the rear bracket hook becomes free of the C-pillar sheet metal. A new headliner should contain the air bag wording at B-pillar trim panel meeting points because improper deployment could lead to injuries or death. Prior to new Safety Canopy® or side air curtain module installation check the roofline for damage while assuring the sheet metal is in its undamaged state and replacing damaged fasteners. Check the module for damage then switch to a new module when its protective cover separates or its material becomes visible rather than making repair attempts. The Safety Canopy® module alongside the side air curtain module require no fasteners or tie straps to be placed anywhere because such installation will interfere with their proper deployment. Apply the installation procedure in reverse order for replacing the headliner and activating the SRS after making sure bolt holes match sheet metal openings.
