The Ford E-250 Oxygen Sensor detects the unburned oxygen in the exhaust and sends a voltage signal to the engine control computer. This keeps the air-fuel mixture balanced for the efficient operation of the catalytic converter and reduced emissions. Inside its steel shell, with threads for mounting in the exhaust path of Ford E-250 models, the Oxygen Sensor contains a zirconium dioxide element coated with platinum electrodes, openings that allow exhaust gas to enter at the tip, and top vents that allow outside air to enter. By approximately 600°F, the oxygen ions migrate across the element. The resulting voltage of 0.1V to 0.9V indicates lean and rich mixtures respectively. An upstream Oxygen Sensor ahead of the catalytic converter is standard on each Ford E-250 for mixture adjustment, while a downstream Oxygen Sensor after the dual catalytic converter provides catalyst efficiency monitoring. Each sensor features a heating element to reach operating temperature quickly and obtain closed loop control. Contamination brought on by coolant, oil, silicone, carbon, or mere aging can give rise to a number of problems in the Oxygen Sensor of Ford E-250. This contamination can slow down the response of the sensor, set a diagnostic trouble code, light up a warning light, raise emissions, and force the computer into a fixed rich condition, thereby reducing fuel mileage.

Ford E-250 Oxygen Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Oxygen Sensor on Ford E-250?
    A:
A service or repair process for the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) starts with engine cover removal followed by disconnecting its electrical connector. Apply penetrating and lock lubricant on the HO2S to help you remove it. Use the Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor Socket to detach the HO2S from its installation point. The HO2S installation requires an initial application of high temperature nickel anti-seize lubricant on its threads before installation begins. Set the torque wrench properly then use the Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor Socket to tighten the HO2S to 46 Nm (34 lb-ft) torque value. Reattach the electrical connector before placing back the engine cover after securement of the HO2S.
