The CV Boot in Ford Edge cars is an essential part that shields the constant velocity (CV) joints which transmits power between the car's transaxle and the wheel. These flexible rubber boots surround the CV joints and exclude dirt and dust while maintaining the required amount of oil. Different CV joints of Ford Edge vehicle available are fixed joints at the outboard end and plunging joints at the inboard side. Thus, the suspension movement is characterized by changes in the angles and the shaft length in the joints of different types. Daily checks should be made on the CV boots as it is a common problem that leads to CV joint failure, and some of the common symptoms include; popping noises and vibrations.

Ford Edge CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the CV Boot on Front Drive Halfshafts on Ford Edge?
    A:
Service work on the CV joint boot of front drive halfshafts starts with taking off the halfshaft assembly. Discard boot clamps first to access the retaining ring at the inboard CV joint. Keep roller bearings from dropping to protect them during removal. Slide away the boot from the CV joint after taking out and discarding its retaining circlip. Insert the 3-jaw puller correctly to detach the CV joint and throw out both the inner boot. Because the outboard CV joint is permanently attached to the halfshaft users must access the boot through its inner side by discarding both boots clamps. When assembling keep the boot clamps separate. Add grease from the kit to the outboard CV joint by filling 1/3 of its space first and spreading equal amounts in the boot. Place the boot over the shaft to match its ribbed section into the shaft's groove and set the outboard halfshaft boot next before installing the clamps onto it. Insert the boot and clamp inside the inboard area then place the CV joint with snap ring on the shaft before filling half of the grease into the joint and elsewhere in the boot. Pay attention to prevent the roller bearings from dropping. Secure the CV housing over the CV joint and put its retaining ring into place. Place the inboard halfshaft boot into the housing groove before fixing its clamps. Measure the complete halfshaft setup and change the inner joint position when needed to reach recommended measurements. Keep the joint steady by hand and press down with the screwdriver to make pressure the same between the boot and joint. End by setting the halfshaft boots in their housing grooves then closing the boot clamps with a soft-faced hammer before putting back the halfshaft assembly.
  • Q: How to Service and Repair the CV Boot on the Rear Drive Halfshafts on Ford Edge?
    A:
You must take out the halfshaft assembly before you can work on the CV Joint Boot for the rear drive halfshafts. Carefully unpack the parts of the inboard CV joint boot by removing its housing clamps first then the boot itself plus the retaining ring, 8 balls, outer race and housing snap ring. From here you can remove any damaged boot materials as the outboard CV joint does not detach from the halfshaft. You need to access the boot by working from its inboard side. To access the outboard CV joint boot you must get rid of both boot clamps and the boot itself. Place the boot on the interconnecting shaft before filling the outboard CV joint with 80 g of grease from the kit. Spread remaining grease evenly throughout the boot. Position the boot into the CV joint groove and use the boot clamp installer to fix 79.6 mm (3.13 in) clamps on the large end and one small clamp on the small end of the boot assembly. When replacing the halfshaft always use a fresh circlip to stop component harm by placing one end into the groove first then sliding it over the shaft. Place a new retainer circlip over the interconnecting shaft and position its small clamp before installing the boot. Insert the assembly into the housing and secure it with the retaining ring after placing both the inner and outer races with their components. Pack 108 grams (3.80 ounces) of CV Boot Kit grease into the inboard housing and place the rest of the grease within the boot then joint. Install the inboard CV joint housing and position the boot inside its designated groove. Lengthen or shorten the halfshaft according to specifications while measuring its total length and adjusting joint pressure through the tool positioned between the boot and CV joint. Afterward install the large 77.5mm boot clamps at the joint's end then the small clamp on top of it to secure the unit successfully.
