Ford Explorer Control Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the upper control arm on Ford Explorer?
A: Start the upper control arm service by measuring fender lip to hub center distance on level ground during the procedure. Place a suitable jack under the wheel knuckle before suspending the suspension until the measured distance becomes equal. The first step entails both upper arm outboard bolt and nut removal after their disposal. Replace the inboard flagnut with a non-flagnut component because it will enable adjustment of rear camber. Proceed by removing the upper arm inboard flagnut after removing its bolt before extracting the upper arm from the vehicle. When installing the upper arm place it then install a new inboard bolt and non-flagnut before tightening the joint to 250 Nm (185 lb-ft). When installing the new outboard bolt you must face its bolt head toward the vehicle front to avoid wheel harm before tightening it to 225 Nm (166 lb-ft). The last step involves lowering the suspension before using the jack to remove it for rear end alignment verification. Adjustments must be applied if required.
