- Q: How to service and repair the battery cables on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?A: The battery requires disconnection as the first step to service or repair its cables. Nicely position the vehicle in NEUTRAL on a hoist. The protective cap on the starter solenoid terminal needs removal along with its wire cable terminal nut which should be tightened to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) during reinstallation. The starter solenoid positive cable terminal nut should be removed next before reinstallation which requires a torque of 9 Nm (80 lb-in). When servicing the starter cables disconnect both the starter solenoid wire cable terminal and starter solenoid positive cable terminal followed by loosening the connector holding nut on the starter motor ground cable terminal and re-torque this nut to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) during reassembly. Disassemble the power steering pressure switch electrical connection and the A/C compressor electrical connection as well as the oil pressure sending unit electrical connection. Place the engine front cover bracket aside while you disconnect the battery cable by removing its nut. Reinstall the bracket with a torque of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Position the battery cable frame bracket after loosening its nut before placing it away and fastening it with 9 Nm (80 lb-in) torque when reinstalling. The battery cable harness locators should be released from the engine front while disconnecting both generator electrical connectors. Position the protective cover aside and remove the nut before positioning the generator B+ terminal aside, and tighten it to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) during reinstallation. Use the battery cable harness locator to disengage from the generator harness guide before opening the BJB cover to unfasten both BJB nuts that must be tightened to 9Nm when reinstalling. Remove the BJB terminal after disconnecting it along with the nut and set aside the battery cable body ground terminal by using 9 Nm (80 lb-in) torque during reinstallation. The Battery Tray needs two battery cable harness locators removed before disconnecting the battery cable electrical connector and then taking off the battery cables. The installation process should follow the same steps in reverse order.
