    Q:
How to service and repair the battery cables on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
The battery requires disconnection as the first step to service or repair its cables. Nicely position the vehicle in NEUTRAL on a hoist. The protective cap on the starter solenoid terminal needs removal along with its wire cable terminal nut which should be tightened to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) during reinstallation. The starter solenoid positive cable terminal nut should be removed next before reinstallation which requires a torque of 9 Nm (80 lb-in). When servicing the starter cables disconnect both the starter solenoid wire cable terminal and starter solenoid positive cable terminal followed by loosening the connector holding nut on the starter motor ground cable terminal and re-torque this nut to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) during reassembly. Disassemble the power steering pressure switch electrical connection and the A/C compressor electrical connection as well as the oil pressure sending unit electrical connection. Place the engine front cover bracket aside while you disconnect the battery cable by removing its nut. Reinstall the bracket with a torque of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Position the battery cable frame bracket after loosening its nut before placing it away and fastening it with 9 Nm (80 lb-in) torque when reinstalling. The battery cable harness locators should be released from the engine front while disconnecting both generator electrical connectors. Position the protective cover aside and remove the nut before positioning the generator B+ terminal aside, and tighten it to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) during reinstallation. Use the battery cable harness locator to disengage from the generator harness guide before opening the BJB cover to unfasten both BJB nuts that must be tightened to 9Nm when reinstalling. Remove the BJB terminal after disconnecting it along with the nut and set aside the battery cable body ground terminal by using 9 Nm (80 lb-in) torque during reinstallation. The battery tray needs two battery cable harness locators removed before disconnecting the battery cable electrical connector and then taking off the battery cables. The installation process should follow the same steps in reverse order.

    Q:
How to Ensure Proper Maintenance of Battery Cables on a Mercury Mountaineer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Prior to repairing or servicing the battery cables the vehicle must be placed in NEUTRAL position and set on a hoist. The battery needs disconnecting followed by removing the protective cap from the starter solenoid terminals and the terminal nut from the wire cable so you can tighten both to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) for reinstallation. The next step requires you to remove the starter solenoid positive cable terminal nut which has to be tightened back to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) after installation. Disconnect the terminals beginning with the wire cable of the starter solenoid followed by the positive cable of the starter solenoid then finish with the nut of the starter motor ground cable terminal before tightening each one to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). The service begins with disconnecting the electrical connectors from the power steering pressure switch and A/C compressor and oil pressure sending unit in sequence. The first nut removal allows you to move aside the engine front cover bracket for the battery cable while tightening it to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) at reinstallation followed by second nut removal to expose the battery cable frame bracket which needs tightening to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) when reinstalling. Detach the battery cable harness locators from the front area of the engine before disconnecting the two generator electrical connectors. The technician should place the protective cover to the side and remove the nut to expose the generator B+ terminal before securing it with 9 Nm (80 lb-in) torque. Release the battery cable harness locator from the generator harness guide and open the BJB cover to remove its two tightened BJB nuts to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) during reinstallation. Take off the BJB terminal after disconnecting it then remove the nut to set the body ground terminal of the battery cable into position before tightening to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). First disconnect the battery cable harness electrical connector at the battery tray before removing the two battery cable harness locators from their position and the battery cables. The procedure for installation follows the steps in reverse order.

    Q:
How to service and repair the battery cables on Mercury Mountaineer? Posted by Customer
    A:
The process of battery cable servicing starts with disconnecting the battery while placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position and hoisting it. You should first remove the protective cap from the starter solenoid before removing its wire cable terminal nut. The nut needs tightening to 6 Nm (53 lb-in) before reinstallation. The starter solenoid positive cable terminal requires nut removal before installation where you should tighten it to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft). After disconnecting both the starter solenoid wire cable terminal and the starter solenoid positive cable terminal, remove the ground cable terminal nut with a torque of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) onto which a comparable value should be applied during reinstallation. Remove the electrical connector of the power steering pressure switch and A/C compressor while also disconnecting the oil pressure sending unit electrical connector. Disconnect the battery cable engine front cover bracket before positioning it aside and fasten it with a torque of 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) during reinstallation. The battery cable frame bracket needs to be removed from its position along with the nut then tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) during assembly. Remove the two generator electrical connectors after releasing the battery cable harness locators from the front engine location. After setting aside the protective cover you must remove the nut which enables access to set aside the generator B+ terminal before tightening the connection to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Tear back the generator harness guide to access the BJB cover and detach its two nuts before reinstalling them tightly at 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Next disconnect the BJB terminal while removing the nut so position the battery cable body ground terminal aside before tightening it to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). The technician must first detach the two battery cable harness locators from the battery tray before disconnecting the battery cable harness electrical connector and then removing the battery cables. The installation should be performed by following the reverse steps of removal.
