Control Arm: Ford Explorer Sport Trac- The Control Arm is an essential component of the suspended system, which actuates the communication between the frame of the car and the wheels. This component rotates in any particular direction to enable the wheels to flex up and down and at the same time align in the right manner. There have been different variants of Control Arms that have been used in the Ford Explorer Sport Trac that has been manufactured over the years such as the stamped steel Control Arm, while others have used the cast iron or cast aluminum Control Arm which is stronger and lighter. As a rule, Control Arms are rather long-lived, but they may wear out with time, especially, their bushings and ball joints. Control Arms with performance-tuned characteristics are provided for customers who would require more control and stability especially when driving under extreme conditions. These newer Control Arms are made of materials as DOM tubular steel or aluminium so that they are capable to carry higher stressed and offer better alignment possibilities on altered vehicles. In totality, the Control Arm plays the key role in the suspension functionality as well as the performance of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac vehicle.

Ford Explorer Sport Trac Control Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower control arm on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
    A:
Measure the lower control arm servicing distance between the hub center and fender lip when the vehicle maintains level ground position. Lift the suspension using a suitable jack placed beneath the wheel knuckle up to the measured distance. We need to begin by removing and discarding the lower arm outboard bolt with flagnut then continue by taking out the stabilizer bar link nut along with its grommet and link which you should throw away the nut and grommet. Lower the suspension after removing the jack to remove the shock absorber lower nut and bolt, and the lower arm inboard nut and bolt which will enable the removal of the lower arm. Place the new lower arm in its position before installing the inboard lower arm bolt and nut while leaving them loose. Their next step involves fixing a new shock absorber lower bolt and nut which will not be tightened at this time. Follow the original suspension height measurement while you put in the stabilizer link with freshly installed nut and grommet then apply torque to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). You need to install new hardware components and you should start with the new outboard bolt on the lower arm. Tighten this bolt to 275 Nm and then move onto the inboard bolt of the lower arm at 250 Nm before locking the shock absorber lower bolt to 275 Nm. To finish the procedure lower the suspension and detach the supporting jack before reattaching the wheel combined with its tire.
