How to Service and Repair the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on Ford F-150?

The first step for rack and pinion upkeep starts when you lock the wheel in place using Hunter (R) 28-75-1 steering wheel holding equipment. Take off the front tires and wheels followed by the removal of applicable 4 skid plate bolts and skid plate. Steering column rotation during shaft detachment will harm the Clock Spring, so remove and recenter the Clock Spring if the column has spun. You must disconnect the steering column shaft through the removal of its bolt which connects to the rack and pinion. Always use new O-ring seals before disconnecting steering lines from the rack and then take off the clamp plate bolt to remove lines while discarding the previous O-ring seals. A Ball Joint Tool Separator should be used to remove the outer tie-rod ends from wheel knuckles with caution while protecting the tie-rod end boot from damage. Discard both outer tie-rod end nuts before the operation. Steer the rack and pinion through the LH wheel opening by removing its 2 bolts and nuts. Install new O-ring seals into the pressure and return lines but position the LH side rack and pinion bushing correctly to stop rack and pinion failure because locking tabs are only present on the RH side bushing. To install the rack and pinion, you should insert it through the LH wheel opening then bolt and tighten its 2 components to 440 Nm (325 lb-ft). Position the 2 outer tie-rod ends and fasten nuts to a torque of 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). Screw the steering line clamp plate bolt to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft) while reattaching the pressure and return lines. Use the steering column shaft to join it with the rack and pinion before installing its bolt which needs 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) torque. Reinstall the skid plate along with its 4 bolts while tightening them to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). The task requires filling the power steering system and checking adjustments for the front toe when needed.
