Safety precautions for brake shift interlock actuator repairs start with draining the back up power before air bags activate; then disconnect the
Battery Cable for one minute along with any additional power sources in the vehicle. Start servicing by removing two screws which secure the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover and tighten new screws to 12 Nm when reinstalling. Perform first steps by disconnecting the left-hand instrument panel finish panel and taking off the right-hand finish panel from the instrument panel. Tighten the screws of the instrument panel opening cover reinforcement to 12 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) before reassembly followed by installing and tightening the steering column opening brace screws to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Remove the selector lever indicator cable and disconnect it by loosening its screw followed by detachment of the cable. Lower the steering column by removing four attachment nuts and the bracket and tighten them to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) upon reinstallation. The removal process finishes with the removal of brake shift interlock actuator and transmission shift selector position insert through their three bolts before installing both components by reusing the 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.) torque setting.
