The first step for crankshaft service and repair procedures includes compassing the crankshaft main bearing journal diameters from two directions for spec compliance. Measure the diameter across two directions at both ends of the crankshaft main bearing journals to evaluate their taper and out-of-round dimensions. After taking off the crankshaft main bearing caps and main bearing you should place Plastigage(R) on each main bearing surface without rotating the crankshaft. Check the crankshaft journal clearance by reinstalling the main bearing cap after Plastigage(R) assessment and removal. The Dial Indicator Gauge enables end play measurements through placing the crankshaft at the cylinder block's rear position before zeroing the indicator which allows recording the end play when moving the crankshaft to the front. The Dial Indicator Gauge should be used to check crankshaft runout after verifying the main bearing journals are in spec. During measurement the crankshaft should be rotated while the lowest reading is subtracted from the highest. The end of your procedure requires assessment of connecting
Rod Bearing journal taper and out-of-round by measuring the diameters across two perpendicular directions at each end while maintaining measurements within specified wear limits.
