    A: The key to successfully repairing the oil pan requires you to maintain engine repair areas clean so foreign materials cannot trigger engine failure. A hoist should position the vehicle while it remains in NEUTRAL mode. The service starts with disconnecting the ground cable from the battery and draining the engine oil. Seventeen oil pan bolts need removal before discarding the gasket. Plastic scraping tools should replace metal scrapers and abrasive brushes to prevent scratches during installation processes because the resulting scratches can produce leaks. Check that all surfaces intended for gasket sealing are both clean and dry before putting in the new oil pan gasket and the oil pan followed by the installation of the 17 bolts. The bolt installation requires a two-step process which begins at 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.) and completes at 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.). After filling the engine with clean engine oil workers need to reconnect the battery ground cable.
