The automatic transmission shifter repair process begins with unmounting the automatic transmission shift lever knob along with its bezel. First, disconnect the shift lever cable end from the shift lever before releasing the two detents to separate the shift lever cable. Next, disconnect the electrical connector. Draw markings with a paint pen on the front and rear points of the shift lever compared to the console before disassembling the four bolts and shift lever from the automobile. Before attaching the shift lever, follow the paint markings made previously. You can avoid misalignment by utilizing the Ford service part known as the shift lever service insert when no marks are available. Secure the shift lever by installing the bolted service insert at the rear center hole of the bottom side first before attaching and tightening the four bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Install the shift lever cable onto the retainer by placing its tabs into the locking position before reconnecting the electrical connector. Insert the shift lever cable end to the shift lever and reinstall the shift lever bezel followed by the knob. To complete the procedure, test that the vehicle begins in Park and Neutral and reverse lamps activate in Reverse while checking shift lever cable adjustments. Move to make adjustments if the changes are required.
