Lincoln MKS Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on Lincoln MKS?
    A:
Begin selecting and fixing the selector lever cable when the vehicle remains in neutral position while placed on a hoist. Start by removing the selector lever bezel before you can disconnect the selector lever cable end from its connection by pressing on the two-release tabs. The LH floor console finish panel should be removed next to reach the cable retainer and rubber grommet while you disconnect the selector lever cable retainer from the center console to extract the cable underneath the heater housing. Begin by removing nuts from the rubber grommet at the bulkhead then disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector as well as unplug the engine breather from the air cleaner (ACL) assembly. The installer must remove the two assembly bolts from the ACL and loosen the outlet pipe clamp at the TB before extracting both parts. Disconnect the selector lever cable retainer both from the brake tube bracket and from the manual control lever end. Use your thumb to push the two tabs at the bracket which will extract the selector lever cable. Position the selector lever cable into the bracket opening of the vehicle before locking the tabs. Position the grommet with the selector lever cable retainer on the brake tube bracket before installing the two nuts that must achieve 7 Nm (62 lb-in) torque. Feed the selector lever cable beneath the heater housing before attaching the retainer to the center console while placing the floor console finish panel at its appropriate spot. The selector lever cable installation on selector lever housing requires proper tab locking before connecting the selector lever cable end to the selector lever. Position the drive selection lever with the manual control lever before rotating the manual control lever until it reaches its stop position followed by operating it counterclockwise by one detent. You must unlock the adjuster by moving its locking tab before you will be able to line up the selector lever cable end with the manual control lever and make the connection when the adjuster locking tab is unlocked. First slide the adjuster lock to its position before locking it and fitting the ACL assembly into place then secure the two bolts by tightening them to 11 Nm (97 lb-in). Reconnect the engine breather to the ACL assembly, and the MAF sensor electrical connector after you tighten the outlet pipe at the TB to 5 Nm (44 lb-in). The installer needs to put on the selector lever bezel and selector lever knob then test the system to confirm park and neutral selection along with proper reverse lamp activation.
