Install Plastigage(R) as a strip across the bearing surfaces of each crankshaft main bearing before removing the crankshaft main bearing caps and bearing. Crankshaft rotation during this operation should always be avoided. Check the crankshaft journal clearance by putting the crankshaft main bearing cap both on and off. A Dial Indicator Gauge should be used to check crankshaft end play by placing the crankshaft at the cylinder block's rear position before zeroing the indicator then moving the crankshaft to the front position to measure and document the end play reading. Crankshaft runout is checked through measuring the main bearing journals' specifications then using the Dial Indicator Gauge to obtain the runout results by rotating the crankshaft while subtracting the lowest reading from the highest reading.
