Q: How to Maintain and Fix Parking Brake Shoe Issues on a Lincoln Town Car?
A: Start servicing and repairing parking brake shoes by taking off the wheel combined with the tire first. Maintaining proper position of the brake caliper and brake pads apart from the brake hose will prevent damage. Separate the two rear guide pin bolts from the brake caliper until you can position the caliper with brake pads aside while supporting it with mechanic's wire. When reinstalling ensure the caliper bolts reach proper torque of 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Removing the adjustment hole access plug will allow you to retract the parking brake shoes by inserting an adjusting tool at the far end of the access plug slot and rotating it toward the backing plate when the rear brake shoes bind to the brake disc. Release the brake disc before removing the adjuster by disconnecting the brake shoe return spring and adjusting spring using a scratch awl and its point as a tool for assistance. Proceed to take out the parking brake actuator through a process of bringing the parking brake shoes together and then drawing the actuator out followed by unfastening the parking brake cable end. Both stopper spring hold-down components along with the parking brake shoe materials need to be taken off first. Automobile technician should check all vehicle components for signs of excess wear or damage before making replacements when needed. Installation requires reverse order of removal steps together with application of anti-seize lubricant to brake shoe contact areas and adjusting screws before installing rear brake shoe components. Adjust the parking brake shoes and tune the parking brake cable tension in the last step.
