How to service and repair the thermostat on Mercury Cougar?

The first step before servicing the thermostat requires draining all coolant from the system. Drain the cooling system fluid first then continue by disconnecting the thermostat hoses followed by removing the cover which requires removal of the three bolts before slipping off the piece. You should remove the thermostat before discarding the O-ring seal. The installation process can be achieved by following the removal steps in reverse order while replacing the O-ring seal at the same time before filling the cooling system.
