Mercury Montego Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on Mercury Montego?
A: The starting point for selector lever cable servicing requires placing the vehicle into NEUTRAL mode on a hoist. The air cleaner and outlet pipe need removal before taking on the center console. The process to disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever starts with pressing a tab then pulling the shift cable free from the housing. You can reach the cable retainer together with the rubber grommet by removing carpet and insulation from their location after that you should remove two instrument panel brace bolts. Position the selector lever cable in front of the vehicle while it passes over the rear floor heat duct before gently moving it out past the instrument panel brace. Disconnect the shift cable from the retainer by removing the two nuts at the rubber grommet found at the bulkhead. Disconnect the shift cable end and remove its electrical connector from the transmission shift cable bracket before using a depress tab method to extract the cable from its bracket. The installation of the shift cable on the 6-speed transaxle requires end cable disconnection together with electrical connector and shift cable retaining clip removal before employing tab squeezing to push the cable through its bracket. The Brake Booster vent hose should be detached along with disconnecting the selector lever cable wire harness. The selector lever cable needs to be pulled through the bulkhead inside the vehicle before removal. Construct the selector lever cable installation by first screwing its two nuts securely and reaching 10 Nm torque (89 inch lbs). Place the selector lever cable behind the instrument panel brace before positioning it under the rear floor heat duct and installing the two bolts which should be tightened to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Place the selector lever cable inside its routing clip before restoring carpet and insulation while guiding the cable into the shifter housing. Install the center console while you connect the selector lever cable end to its destination. Install the selector lever cable through the bracket so the tabs lock in position before installation of the retaining clip while connecting the electrical connector to the selector lever cable bracket. It is essential to avoid damaging the manual control lever by not forcing the selector lever cable end onto it. The shift cable of the CVT transaxle needs to be introduced into the bracket so its tab forms a lock before you join the electrical connector and shift cable end. Complete the installation by connecting the wire harness to the selector lever cable then slide back the vent hose to the brake booster followed by installation of the air cleaner and reattachment of the outlet pipe. Check and modify the shift cable when required.
