How to service and repair the accelerator cable on Mercury Sable?

When servicing and repairing the accelerator cable start by disconnecting it at the pedal while placing the pedal into the position that releases cable tension. Press the tabs of the accelerator pedal retaining pin to separate the cable connection. Service to the accelerator cable starts with removing the accelerator cable splash shield after eliminating its pin-type retainers. Follow up by detaching the accelerator cable by putting the throttle cam in wide open throttle position (WOT) before taking out the accelerator cable slug from the throttle cam. The tabs on the accelerator cable need depression to disconnect the cable from the accelerator cable bracket then the grommet must be extracted from the bulkhead position. Reinstall the system with the opposite steps like removal.
