    Q:
What Precautions and Steps Are Involved in Servicing the Clock Spring Assembly on Lincoln LS? Posted by Customer
    A:
Safety glasses should be worn during Clock Spring assembly maintenance to protect against air bag activation while handling air bag modules require the air bag and trim cover pointed in a specific direction away from your body. The risk of sodium hydroxide residue requires hands washing after handling live air bag modules since body contact with the module face must be avoided. Air bag module connectors should never come under probing and you must swap out damaged or discolored air bag modules instead of performing any painting operations. It is normal for the air bag warning lamp to illuminate after removing the RCM fuse when the ignition switch is ON. Operation of memory saver devices should be prohibited during this process. A vehicle returns to customers only after the SRS system works faultlessly. Before starting with the procedure make sure all road wheels face forward. Next align the steering column downward before extending it fully out of the way and then deactivate the system. Before servicing remove the driver air bag module together with the steering wheel and both upper and lower instrument panel steering column covers. Two strips of masking tape should be applied to prevent the Clock Spring from rotating. The assembly of Clock Spring and multifunction switch requires you to disconnect two lower electrical connectors and the multifunction switch connector before removing the multifunction switch screws and Clock Spring screws. The installation process requires that road wheels remain straight while the Clock Spring obtains its central position from its pre-assembled centering. While maintaining stationary position of the outer housing, rotate the rotor counterclockwise until you experience resistance followed by clockwise movement of 2.5 turns to arrive at the center point. Slide the assembly onto the steering column after interlocking the tab points of the multifunction switch to the Clock Spring. Install the Clock Spring screws alongside the multifunction switch while connecting electrical connectors. Either cut the pin to reuse a new Clock Spring or remove tape to keep the existing one. The system operation can be completed by reattaching the instrument panel covers and driver air bag module and steering wheel followed by system power restoration.
