The procedure to remove the driver air bag module begins by removing two back cover plugs from the steering wheel followed by removing two bolts on the module itself and ending with dispatching the module by releasing retaining tabs while marking the electrical connector slib number. Before removing a driver air bag module on Expedition vehicles repairmen need to unplug the horn switch electrical connection. Before removing the module for Navigator vehicles the technician must disconnect both the driver air bag module and the accessories electrical connector. Maintain the road wheels in direct alignment before removing the steering wheel by taping the Clock Spring area to stop its rotation. The gear selector cover and lower and upper steering column shrouds need removal before separating the multi-function switch from the Clock Spring assembly. Unplug all Clock Spring electrical connectors and take out the Clock Spring to check if there are any damages on the bracket. When installing the Clock Spring bracket it should receive screws for attachment. The new Clock Spring requires central positioning before removing the key when keeping the rotor stationary so it does not turn. To centralize the Clock Spring securely keep the outer housing stationary while rotating the rotor counterwise until resistance occurs followed by clockwise rotation of about 2.75 turns. Reconnect the negative battery cable only after you connect the electrical connectors of the Clock Spring and place the Clock Spring onto the steering column with proper alignment. Reposition the discarded tape from the removal process and then reconnect the multi-functional switch along with tightening the steering column upper and lower shrouds. After configuring the gear selector cover you must install the steering wheel while respecting all safety precautions. The installation of horn switch and driver air bag module electrical connectors on Expedition vehicles requires matching the keyways before securing the module at the steering wheel position. Install the accessories electrical connector for Navigator vehicles before setting the driver air bag module into its place. Repower the system after installing both driver air bag module bolts with the two steering wheel back cover plugs.

There is a fundamental reason why the air bag warning lamp should illuminate when the RCM fuse leaves its power connection while the ignition switch remains active. Disassemble the lower steering column shroud by removing its two screws and unfasten the single screw securing the upper shroud. The multi-function switch needs its screw removed followed by retaining tab liberation and finally moving the switch aside. After unscrewing the components from the steering column shaft you can slide the Clock Spring off while removing its electrical connectors. You should check the condition of the Clock Spring bracket before moving on to take it out if any damage exists. The new Clock Spring bracket needs 6 Nm (53 lb-in) force for screw installation. To install the new Clock Spring users should hold a key in position to maintain central assembly but must first remove the key without letting the rotor turn. When the Clock Spring moves away from its center position you must first stabilize the outer housing while performing a counterclockwise rotation of the rotor until you notice resistance then continue the motion clockwise by 2.75 turns. Connect the wires and position the Clock Spring correctly toward the steering column before fitting it onto the screws. The procedure requires removal of previous tape before aligning the multi-function switch and verifying the retaining tab engages while installing the multi-function switch screw. Secure the steering column shrouds at their upper and lower positions through screw installation along with gear selector cover attachment for equipped vehicles. Perform another Clock Spring centralization process if the vehicle remains unattended after taking it out from the steering wheel installation. You must install the steering wheel as well as a driver air bag module before performing system repower.
