Safety glasses should always be worn to prevent injuries that can occur through air bag deployment during Clock Spring servicing while you should transport a live air bag module which needs to have its air bag and trim cover directed away from your body. The system needs to be depowered and the air bag module of the driver should be disconnected while both road wheels remain in a straight-ahead position before you remove the steering wheel. Two strips of masking tape should be applied across the Clock Spring to stop it from unintentionally rotating while being removed. The full upward position of the tilt steering column makes shroud removal possible through the removal of the tilt column lever along with three lower shroud screws and release of upper shroud retainers to finally disconnect the Clock Spring electrical connector. The Clock Spring can be removed from the steering column by releasing three retaining clips and sliding it off the column. The key removal process to hold the rotor centrally requires avoiding rotor rotation. When recentering the Clock Spring make certain road wheels face forward while rotating the rotor anticlockwise until it stops then clockwise to match the arrows and finish with two complete clockwise turns to define the center point. To replace the Clock Spring with an identical one, pull off the tape without rotating the sensor and position its flat sides properly on the steering column before sliding and firmly engaging the retaining tabs. Before continuing with installation connect the Clock Spring electrical connector, then install and secure upper steering column shroud and engage the shift lever boot (if present) while using the three screws to fasten the lower shroud. The system needs final reinstallation of the tilt column lever combined with the steering wheel and driver air bag module. The system must be checked for full functionality with no faults detected before vehicle release.

The first procedure for servicing or repairing the Clock Spring assembly includes disabling the SRS while removing the driver air bag module. You must position both road wheels straight ahead before you take off the steering wheel. Masking tape strips should be applied across the Clock Spring to stop it from turning while being removed. The tilt steering column needs to extend fully up during the removal process of both lower and upper steering column shrouds. Clear the tilt column lever while also removing the three screws which fasten the lower steering column shroud. After this release the upper shroud retainers to detach the lower version. This process requires you to disconnect the Clock Spring electrical connector then release the retaining clips followed by sliding the Clock Spring off the steering column. While installing a new Clock Spring users should take out the key which both maintains the rotor center position but prevents rotation from occurring. For recentering the Clock Spring first make sure both road wheels point straight and then rotate the rotor counterclockwise until it resting point followed by clockwise rotation until arrows meet and finally provide two full clockwise turns to achieve center position. The tape should be removed from the Clock Spring only after it stops rotating. Insert the column flats of the Clock Spring into the steering column and push it onto the column until the retaining tabs automatically lock in place. Install the Clock Spring electric connector then put the steering column shroud on top and place the column shift lever boot if your car has one. The lower steering column shroud needs reattachment while installing the three screws, the tilt column lever, the steering wheel and the driver air bag module before powering the SRS system.

Service procedures for the Clock Spring assembly start by executing an SRS depowering process and unmounting the driver air bag module before continuing. Keep the road wheels at a straight-ahead position so the Clock Spring remains undamaged before uninstalling the steering wheel. Two strips of masking tape should be applied crosswise on the Clock Spring to avoid unintended rotation while working. Raise the tilt steering column into its maximum position to enable easy extraction of the steering column lower and upper shrouds. First remove the tilt column lever and the three lower steering column shroud screws before freeing the retainers on the upper shroud to remove all components. Free the electrical connector of the Clock Spring then detach the three retaining clips for successful complete removal of the Clock Spring from the steering column. Before installation with a fresh Clock Spring the key needs replacement while keeping the rotor at its central position with no rotor movement. When recentering a Clock Spring start by turning the rotor counterclockwise until it stops before aligning the arrows using clockwise motion followed by making two full clockwise turns until the rotor stays at the center point without rotating. When reusing the original Clock Spring the tape should be removed without turning it. Place the flats of the Clock Spring against the steering column after which you should slide it along the column before locking in place using the retaining tabs. Proceed with connecting the electrical connector followed by fitting the upper steering column shroud and fastening the column shift lever boot when present before fastening three screws on the lower shroud. Complete the procedure by reinstalling the tilt column lever and steering wheel and driver air bag module before powering the SRS system. The vehicle should only go out when the SRS system demonstrates full operation and no faults are detected.

Start the Clock Spring service by putting on masking tape across the Clock Spring then extracting the steering wheel to prevent Clock Spring rotation during maintenance. The tilting steering control must reach its highest position before removing both upper and lower shrouds from the steering column. Begin service on the Clock Spring assembly by taking out the tilt column lever and three lower steering column screws. Subsequently remove both shrouds by releasing their retainers. The Clock Spring electrical connector should be disconnected while allowing removal of three retaining clips before extracting the Clock Spring from the steering column. The key used to maintain rotor central positioning should be removed during new Clock Spring installations since rotor turn is prohibited. When recentering the Clock Spring begin by keeping the road wheels pointed forward and rotate the rotor counterclockwise until it stops while feeling the ribbon wire resistance. Start by making the rotor point toward the arrows until they align before performing two full clockwise rotations to establish the center position without allowing the rotor to move from this central point. The Clock Spring should receive tape removal while its movement remains limited to none. The flats on the Clock Spring should align with the steering column before sliding it onto the column for retaining tab deployment. Connect the Clock Spring electrical connector after which you should position the upper steering column shroud and attach the column shift lever boot when present. After securing the lower steering column shroud with three screws it becomes possible to reinstall the tilt column lever and steering wheel. The driver air bag module needs to be installed while repowering the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
