It is essential to begin transmission shifter service and repair by using a specific tool to remove the automatic transmission shift lever trim ring on MKX vehicles. A suitable tool must be used to lift the armrest before removing both the center console trim cover from all vehicles. The power outlet trim cover requires the removal of its two fasteners before placing it aside. The end of the automatic transmission shift lever cable should detach from its position on the automatic transmission shift lever before gently removing the two tabs and extracting the automatic transmission shift lever cable from the housing. Remove the automatic transmission shift lever by first detaching its electrical connector then removing its securing bolts. To install, place the automatic transmission shift lever in position then bolt it with tightening torque set at 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). After reconnecting the electrical connector, you must verify the automatic transmission shift lever cable locking tabs as well as the cable end position on the ball stud. A click sound indicates that the cable achieved correct bracket placement, which can be verified by gentle pulling motion. Feed the automatic transmission shift lever cable into the housing before setting the automatic transmission shift lever position to REVERSE while taking off the cable end from the manual control lever. After attachment of the cable to the automatic transmission shift lever, shift to DRIVE. The procedure ends with reattaching both the power outlet trim cover and center console trim cover. The MKX requires implementation of the automatic transmission shift lever trim ring. Set the manual control lever to DRIVE by rotating it clockwise to its end position before counterclockwise rotation by one detent. Unlock the adjuster by gently pulling on its latch while sliding the lock tab beyond it. Fix the automatic transmission shift lever cable end to the manual control lever then connect them as the adjuster locking tab clears before pushing the release tab to set the adjuster lock position. The completion step includes checking that the vehicle can start only in PARK and NEUTRAL positions while the reverse lamps activate in REVERSE.
