A Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must always receive inspection for repair if it activated during any collision event. Deactivation of the SRS requires mandatory steps before starting any servicing process. Activating the system requires removing diagnostic tools and reconnecting air bag modules because any remaining tools could stop air bags from deploying when a crash occurs resulting in injuries. Replacement or diagnostic work on a seat side air bag seat needs the removal of the seat followed by connection of restraint system diagnostic tools to the seat air bag electrical system before proceeding. Drivers need to eliminate these diagnostic equipment prior to street use of their vehicles. The SRS needs complete operation with no fault findings before the Government lets the customer have their vehicle. The repair requirement specifies that all deployed devices alongside all impact sensors and the RCM must receive removal and installation when the RCM stores the DTC B1231 (Crash Data Memory Full) and one or more deployable devices either the driver air bag or passenger air bag or seat side air bag or safety belt pretensioner gets deployed. All impact sensor mounting points and mounting hardware require necessary repairs to restore them to proper condition. Vehicle examination should start with an inspection of the steering column and Clock Spring followed by checks of instrument panel knee bolster positions and mounts before moving on to instrument panel supports and fixture points and seat frame attachment points. The evaluation should also include safety belts along with their retractors and buckles and SRS wiring, harnesses and connectors. The final step includes component replacement or repair of everything detected in the examination.

Ensure no one is in the vehicle and nothing obstructs the air bag modules.

Confirm that all restraint system diagnostic tools have been removed.

Discard the existing bolts and use new ones for installation.

The driver air bag module should be removed, and restraint system diagnostic tools 418-F395 (two required) should be attached to the clockspring electrical connectors.

Ensure all restraint system diagnostic tools are removed.

The Restraints Control Module (RCM) should be connected.

The flashing may not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON, as this is the time needed for the Restraints Control Module (RCM) to complete its SRS testing.
