What is the purpose and functionality of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint System and Airbag on 1993-2011 Ford Ranger?

Subsequent models have a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System, or airbag, to cushion the driver and front passenger from head-on/frontal collisions. Such components of the system as an airbag module located in the center of the steering wheel and on the right side of the instrument panel, two front crash sensors, and a diagnostic monitor with a backup power supply mounted in the passenger compartment. On 2010 and later models, driver and front passenger side-impact supplemental airbags are included in the top of the front seat backs. The steering wheel-mounted airbag inflator module comprises of a housing of the air bag together with the inflator; it inflates the bag within almost the blink of an eye on receipt of an electrical impulse. If fitted as standard, the passenger airbag is larger and positioned above the glove compartment on a steel reinforcement. The Restraint Control Module (RCM) supervises the airbag system and tests it every time the vehicle starts, a lamp will also light to show the normal operation or failure of the airbag system. Any work which is to be performed near the SRS system should be done with the system deactivated to prevent the accidental deployment of the system. The first models have three sensors while the later models have four though all these send signals to the electronic diagnostic monitor for the triggering of the airbag in case of an impact. The electronic diagnostic monitor helps to check the functionality of airbag system, also it reminds the driver about the presence of some malfunctions. Specific procedures, which also differ between 2005 and earlier, and 2006 and later models, are needed to disable the system; the procedure included disconnecting the battery and removal of the RCM fuse. To enable the system, one has to reconnect the battery, and replace the fuse, after which you have to conduct a test that shows that the system is working as it should, by observing the warning lights' behavior.
