Power Steering Pump

The power steering pump servicing process begins by avoiding oil type mixing because such operations degrade seals and create leaks which result in power steering assist failure. Start by pulling out the fuel pump fuse because this action will stop the engine from starting. After removing the bolt you should place the evaporative emissions canister (EVAP canister) to the side. The power steering return hose needs to be disconnected from the reservoir fitting while plugging it with a temporary solution. Install an extension hose between the power steering return hose and an empty container before elevating the front wheels while filling the reservoir. The procedure requires moderation during engine cranking since extended sessions exceeding 15 seconds will damage the starter with minimal rest time of one minute before attempting another crank cycle. Extremely long periods of forcing the wheel to its stops should be avoided to protect the power steering pump from damage. The power steering return hose should generate clear exiting fluid during engine cranking at each stop position before repeating the fluid refill process for the reservoir. Lower the vehicle while disconnecting the extension hose from the power steering return hose before removing its plug to reattach the power steering return hose to the reservoir without going past the filling limit. Replace the evaporative emissions canister followed by reinstallation of the bolt while also installing the fuel pump fuse. End the procedure by starting up the engine while performing slow circular movements of the steering wheel. A power steering system that produces noise alongside fluid aeration will require a purge of the system together with fluid level verification.

No mixing of oil types during service and repair of power steering pumps should be avoided because it can degrade seals and produce leaks leading to power steering assist failure. The appropriate fluid needs to be added to the reservoir before removing the fuel pump fuse to halt engine start-up. The engine cranking should not exceed 15 seconds at any given time; wait at least one minute between attempts to protect the starter from early breakdown. During engine cranking keep the steering wheel from stop-to-stop until three to five seconds have passed to protect the power steering pump from damage. Complete these procedures then lower the vehicle but ensure the reservoir stays underneath its maximum mark before returning the fuel pump fuse.

Reverse the removal procedure, ensuring that although the pump has four mounting bolt holes, only three bolts are utilized to secure it to the engine.
