When servicing the muffler and tailpipe assembly of a 4.6L engine it is essential to wait until the exhaust system cools down properly to prevent injuries since the catalytic converter reaches hazardous temperatures rapidly. Using oil or grease based lubricants should be avoided on isolators because they cause rubber deterioration which leads to possible separation of the exhaust hanger bracket. Put the vehicle in NEUTRAL mode at the same time set it up on a hoist. A safety stand should hold the muffler and tailpipe assembly after which you can remove all hanger isolators. After loosening the Torca clamp nut on the muffler you should reduce tension but ensure proper torque of 40 Nm when reattaching. Begin by disassembling the muffler and tailpipe from the catalytic converter and then proceed with removing all operational parts from the assembly. Follow the same steps that were used for removal to properly install the exhaust system components.

Detach the assembly from the catalytic converter or extension pipe if equipped.
