Muffler, Rear

A vehicle hoist set to NEUTRAL position should support the vehicle for muffler and tailpipe service and repairs. Unfasten the connection between the catalytic converter and muffler or eliminate the exhaust intermediate pipe from muffler attachment. Remove the two muffler rear bracket nuts then disconnect rubber isolators to take out the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Install the muffler with tailpipe assembly by placing it correctly before attaching the rubber isolators. Install the two muffler rear bracket nuts only loosely. The exhaust coupling installation requires a clean surface without rust from an abrasive pad followed by placing a fresh coupling at the catalytic converter-to-muffler joint or exhaust intermediate-to-muffler junction point with the coupling point no further back than 4 mm (0.15 inch) from the end button. Combine the exhaust system and tighten the coupling connecting the catalytic converter to the muffler until it reaches 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.), then secure the two rear bracket nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Using new fasteners with the same part number as original components together with following torque specification during reassembly will help maintain proper exhaust component retention.

Remove and discard the two muffler rear bracket nuts, then disconnect the rubber isolators.
