Safety glasses should always be worn when servicing an air bag control module because accidental deployments present injury risks. Proper operation of the supplemental restraint system (SRS) relies on the correct position of the restraints control module (RCM). A damaged center tunnel area caused by collision requires a new RCM replacement for the system even when the air bags did not deploy. The RCM demands its original horizontal position while connected and the ignition is ON to prevent unintended safety canopy activation. Using memory saver devices creates additional risks of personal injuries to the technicians. Electronic modules react poorly to static electricity because it creates destructive consequences. Installing a new RCM requires using the correct part to prevent the generation of erroneous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). The RCM fuse removal with ignition ON activation will cause the air bag warning lamp to light up but this action does not indicate an SRS problem. A vehicle should only be handed over to customers after completing a full operational check that shows no faulty SRS conditions. Replacement of a new component constitutes the proper repair method after which the installer must reinstall the original part before running a second diagnostic check. You must first depower the system before accessing the RCM by removing the lower LH center instrument panel finish panel together with repositioning the carpet on the LH and RH tunnel area. The thumbs-tab on the large RCM electrical connector activates the connector release mechanism which lets you pivot the connector position assurance lever back and remove the connector. Users should disconnect the small RCM electrical connector while they remove the three bolts attaching the RCM. Position the RCM before threading in the three bolts while tightening them to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). Ensure the connector position assurance lever is completely unlocked before connecting both the small and large RCM electrical connector pins. The large connector should be installed straight to maintain proper connections and protect both components from damage. Push the large connector gently until it clicks audibly before you activate the connector position assurance lever. Repower the system only after the removal of carpet and installation of the lower LH center instrument panel finish panel.
