    Q:
What precautions should be taken when servicing the air bag control module and ensuring the proper operation of the restraints control module (RCM) on Mercury Mariner? Posted by Customer
    A:
Safety glasses represent an essential protective tool when servicing the air bag control module because they prevent accidental deployment-caused injuries. Proper functionality of the supplemental restraint system (SRS) depends on the alignment position of the restraints control module (RCM). esus examining after collisions that damaged the center tunnel should check the RCM mounting bracket and deformation. Whenever deformation exists you should replace the RCM regardless of whether air bags deployed. Do not move the horizontal position of the RCM during connection with ignition ON because it can lead to accidental safety canopy deployment. Using memory saver devices should be avoided because they create risks of personal injury. Electronic modules have a high sensitivity to static charges because they become easily damaged by them. The use of proper RCM units is crucial since vehicles with safety canopies and side air bags need different 40-pin connectors to those without these components and forcing the connector might harm both components. When the RCM fuse is detached during the ignition phase the air bag warning lamp activates properly since it suggests no SRS malfunction exists. An SRS unit requires full operation with no faults present before you return the vehicle to the customer. To fix the issue you need to install a new component; in case the problem remains you should reinstall the original unit while running diagnostic tests twice. The RCM removal process starts by powering down the system then freeing the lower LH center instrument panel finish panel before readjusting the carpet on the LH and RH tunnel to reach the RCM. You must disconnect the RCM electrical connector through the thumb tab pinching method while rotating the connector position assurance lever backward to expose the connector. Detach the small RCM electrical connector while you remove the three bolts fastening the RCM in position. The RCM should be placed into position before installing and tightening the three bolts to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). When attaching the small RCM electrical connector start by freeing the position assurance lever then proceed to join the large RCM electrical connector. To avoid connector damage, position the large connector correctly before applying light pressure which should produce a click sound and complete the connector with the lever. Activate and lock the thumb tab for security. Reinstall the lower LH center instrument panel finish panel followed by reconnection of the system power before reinstalling the carpet.
