    Q:
What precautions should be taken when servicing the air bag control module on Ford Escape? Posted by Customer
    A:
Safety glasses must be worn while servicing the air bag control module because the accidental deployement poses injury risks to your eyes. A proper working air bag requires the restraints control module (RCM) to maintain its right orientation thus inspect the mounting bracket of RCM for deformation after any collision that impacts the center tunnel area replacing RCM if needed irrespective of air bag deployment. Move the restraints control module at all times when connected and with the ignition ON without altering its maintained horizontal position to minimize risks of safety canopy deployment. Memory saver devices create a personal injury risk therefore they should not be used. Electronic device modules have a high sensitivity to static electricity and this sensitivity can produce destructive effects. The device must receive its appropriate RCM because vehicles with safety canopies and side air bags require separate 40-pin connectors and unauthorized force on these connectors risks harming the RCM and its connector. When an SRS RCM fuse removal occurs during ignition ON, the air bag warning lamp should illuminate by design although this absence of warning does not signify an SRS system fault. The SRS should operate without faults to receive a vehicle back from the customer. Spurious issues must be fixed by installing a fresh part initially while following up with diagnostics and switching back to the original component. Begin by powering down the system and then you can remove the lower LH center instrument panel finish panel which reveals access to the RCM through the carpet on the LH and RH tunnel. First pinch the thumb tab and rotate the connector position assurance lever before you can disconnect the large RCM electrical connector. First disconnect the small RCM electrical connector then disconnect the three bolts preventing the RCM from removal. Place the RCM correctly then install the three bolts while tightening them to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). Complete step by step the installation of small RCM electrical connector until the release lever reaches a fully exposed position before continuing with the large RCM electrical connector connection. Position the large connector correctly and apply light force until a locking click sounds before using the lever to finish the connector seating. Check that the thumb tab has properly engaged its position. The system repowering process ends with carpet placement followed by the installation of the lower LH center instrument panel finish panel.

    Q:
What happens when the RCM fuse is removed with the ignition ON for the 2006 Mercury Mariner? Posted by Customer
    A:
The air bag warning lamp will illuminate, which is normal and does not indicate an SRS fault.
