Side Impact Sensor

Service or repair of the side impact sensor begins with verifying the vehicle has not sustained any collision damage before inspecting the restraints control module (RCM) together with its mounting areas for damage along with restoring any original production system configuration. A driver needs to install new RCM sensors for the vehicle even if air bags did not deploy because this prevents dangerous injuries in unexpected crashes. Begin all repairs by first disabling power to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Open the door to remove its scuff plate while placing the carpeting to one side for access to the side impact sensor. Unplug the electrical connector of the side impact sensor before eliminating the bolt and removing the sensor itself. To prevent incorrect restraint system operation install the new sensor by tightening the bolt to 11 Nm (97 lb-in) while making sure that the RCM and impact sensor fasteners reach their specified torque. You need to inspect the mating surfaces of the side impact severity sensor for dirt as well as corrosion before starting the installation process. The SRS requires final repowering for procedure completion to check that the system operates correctly and without any faults before the vehicle release.

The air bag warning indicator will illuminate.

Always wear eye protection to prevent serious personal injury.

Tighten the retaining bolt to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

It is normal for the air bag warning lamp to illuminate when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON; this does not indicate a fault in the supplemental restraint system.
