One must begin the repair of Ford 8.8-Inch Ring Gear axle shafts by elevating the vehicle after support then extracting the rear wheel and tire assembly. Start by removing both the differential housing cover then draining all lubricating fluid while also removing the brake drum. The maintenance process starts with removing the differential pinion shaft after breaking the lock bolt and extracting the shaft. You should be mindful of O-ring damage to the axle shaft groove during U-washer removal by moving the shaft inside. Expel the axle shaft with careful action to avoid injuring the wheel bearing oil seal. Install and maintain the axle shaft by applying Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or an equivalent product based on Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B on the wheel bearing oil seal's lip before installation to avoid damage to the oil seal. The U-washer installation begins with placing it onto the axle shaft button end followed by shaft outward extension. The installation process requires new pinion shaft lock bolts unless unavailable when Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA equivalent to Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 must be coated on the threads followed by differential pinion shaft placement into the case lock bolt hole and secure it with a new bolt. Post-installation involves setting the brake drum and differential housing cover alongside the addition of 2.37 liters (5 pints) of Motorcraft Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or an equivalent meeting Ford specification WSL-M2C192-A to the rear axle housing. Inspection of all wheel and wheel hub or brake drum surfaces must occur to remove corrosion while preventing foreign matter to ensure proper metal contact between these surfaces keeps the lug nut from untightening and wheel detachment. Standards. After cleansing the mounting surfaces for wheel hubs or brake drums and wheels from contaminants use 2.37 liters (5 pints) of Motorcraft Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent product to finish the mounting process.

Take care not to damage the rubber O-rings in the U-washer grooves while pushing the axle shafts inboard.

Carefully remove the two axle shafts, ensuring the wheel bearing oil seal remains undamaged.

Carefully push the flanged end of the axle shaft toward the center to remove the U-washer, ensuring not to damage the wheel bearing oil seal or rotate the differential side gears.

Clean any corrosion, dirt, or foreign material to maintain proper metal-to-metal contact.

Coat the threads with Threadlock@ and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or an equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 before installing the differential pinion shaft.

Remove the lock screw and the differential pinion shaft, which is a slip-fit design and can be removed by hand.

Raise and support the vehicle, then remove the wheel and tire assembly.

Repeat the removal of the lock screw and pinion shaft, then push the axle shaft into the axle tube, engaging it with the differential side gear splines. Install the U-washer and pull the axle shaft outward until it locks into place.

Lubricate the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal with grease.
