2000 Ford Windstar Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How should the shift cable be serviced and repaired on 2000 Ford Windstar?
A: Replacing the shift cable becomes necessary whenever you extract it from its cable retaining brackets. When engine or steering column and transaxle removal becomes necessary service technicians should not cut the shift cable from its retaining brackets but should remove the brackets which still contain the cable. The service of shift cable begins with cable extraction from the steering column lever pivot ball and then moving onto retaining clip removal and finally separating the shift cable. Begin by detaching the cable grommet from the dash panel followed by moving the shift cable from the manual control shift outer lever and finally proceeding to detach the cable retainer and shift cable. Feed the shift cable trunkwards through the access hole in the dash panel. To install place the shift cable through the dash panel opening before putting the grommet into position. The retainer should be used to fasten the shift cable onto the bracket before placing the cable into the bracket to snap it onto the manual control shift outer lever pivot ball. Place the shift cable within the bend bracket then mount it through the selector arm ball stud. Conclude by doing any necessary adjustments to the shift cable.
