2001 Ford Windstar Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on 2001 Ford Windstar?
A: The procedure for servicing and repairing shift cables starts while keeping the gearshift lever in the OD position. Detach the shift cable from the steering column and the shift assembly arm and take it away from the steering column bracket. Tear the rubber grommet through the bulkhead while letting the air inlet cover rest to the side after you loosen the clamps which separate the tube. The removal procedure for the existing shift cable begins with disconnecting the manual control lever but only if a new shift cable installation is not required. Afterward push the lock tab to separate it from the bracket then remove the shift cable from the vehicle. To continue assemble the shift cable bracket and nut together with its bolts must be removed first. Moving the shift cable assembly out of the vehicle must be done as one complete item. The installation requires a reversal of removal steps with shift cable adjustment followed by reattach of the air inlet cover.
